Asphalt Shingles vs. Metal Roofing in Tennessee

February 23, 2026 ·By Terry Woodall

Side-by-side comparison of an asphalt shingle roof and a standing-seam metal roof

When it is time to replace a roof in Middle Tennessee, the first real decision is material: stick with asphalt shingles, or step up to metal? Both are good choices here. The right one depends on your home, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.

Upfront cost

Asphalt shingles win on price. A quality asphalt shingle roof typically costs a fraction of a standing-seam metal roof of the same size. If budget is the deciding factor, architectural shingles deliver strong value and a wide range of looks.

Lifespan

This is where metal pulls ahead. In our climate:

  • Architectural asphalt shingles: roughly 20–30 years, depending on ventilation and storm exposure.
  • Standing-seam metal: commonly 40–60+ years.

A metal roof can outlast two or three shingle roofs, which changes the math if you are staying in the home long term.

Hail and wind

Middle Tennessee sees plenty of both. Quality metal handles hail and wind far better than shingles — severe hail may leave cosmetic dents on some metal profiles, but it rarely causes the functional damage and leaks that hail inflicts on asphalt. For shingles, Class 4 impact-resistant options narrow the gap and may earn an insurance discount.

Heat and energy

Our long, humid summers favor metal’s reflectivity — a metal roof bounces solar heat instead of soaking it up, which can ease the load on your air conditioning. Shingles absorb more heat, making attic ventilation especially important to protect their lifespan.

Aesthetics and neighborhood

Look matters, and so do the rules. In historic Franklin and rural Leiper’s Fork, standing-seam metal fits the architecture beautifully and is often welcomed. In many Brentwood subdivisions, HOA standards lean toward architectural shingles — always confirm approved materials before you commit.

The honest bottom line

  • Staying 10+ years, want to roof once? Metal often pays back.
  • Budget-focused, or planning to sell soon? Architectural shingles make sense.
  • High hail exposure? Consider metal or impact-resistant shingles.
